Antibiotics to Probiotics
· Probiotics are non pathogenic microbes used to confer health benefits to the recipient
· The derangement of normal body flora has been held responsible for causation of various disorders.
· They have been tried in a number of infective and non infective disorders and found useful
· They have the ability to supplement the normal body flora
· Users and Probiotics : Helicobacter pylori, which colonizes the stomach, is implicated in the aetiology of gastric cancer. Various preclinical studies shown that antibacterial substances produced by some Lactobacilli inhibit the growth, colonization and survival of this pathogen.
Na takrasevi vyathathe kadachith
Na takra dagdhah prabhavanthi rogaha
· Malabsorption and Probitics :
· Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) is a collective term used for ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD)
· There is enough evidence that IBD is caused by an abnormaol immune response to a luminal antigen and it appears that the antigens are probably commensal bacteria
· Therefore, it makes sense to either eliminate some bacteria with antibiotics or to after the gut flora, in favour of more beneficial bacteria, by the use of probiotics.
· Septaham va dashaham va masardhameva va
· Bala kala vihagagno bhishak takram prayojayeth
· Buttermilk and curd is the richest source identified for probiotics such as Lactobacillus
· Importance : Yatha suranam amrutham pradhanam tatha naraanaam bhuvi takramaahu

Viability of probiotics
· The most important part of administration of probiotice is their viability in the environment of stomach and intestine where gastric and bile juices are present
· The viability of probiotics may also be improved by using a medium, nutrient and temperature which supports their survival.
· Our ancestors formulated panchagavya using the five componebts of cow in different ratio.
· Here the probiotics are present in media which protects them as well as provides nutrition for their survival.
· No funds
· No lab
· No modern instruments
· But lot of common sense has gone into these findings and formulations
· Let us take a look at one from the Siddha system of medicine

Can there be a better example of a nutraceutrical?
By the way 'A nutraceutrical is any substance that is a food or a part of a food and provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease.

Ghrta and the Cholesterol controversy
Study done at CFTRI, Mysore, Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition by Dr. Matam Vijayakumar.
Effect of dietary ghee - the anthydrous milk fat, on blood and liver lipids in rats.
No lipid liposition was observed either in the arteries or in the livers of animals fed a diet containing ghee (for a period of 8 weeks). Interestingly, serum Cholesterol levels decreased in a dose dependent manner when ghee was incorporated at levels ranging from 2.5 to 10% in the diet.

In the same study authores say :
· In Ayurvedic system of medicine, ghee is given in graded amounts to patients to reach a level of 350 to 500 grm / day in the treatment of skin diseases and allergy.
· Our unpublished results show that serum Cholesterol levels were decreased by 8 to 15% in these patients after ghee was consumed as a part of the theropy.
· Pithe - ghrtam lihyath!
· Vathe - ghrtham pibeth!
Whom should we believe? It is left to your choice.

Better than butter
· Hydrogenated vegitable oils (Margarine) are being marked with the slogan better than butter
· Butter is prepared from cream, contains saturated fat
· Both saturated fat and cholesterol raise unhealthy colesterol or LDL (low - density lipoprotein)
· Margarine is manufactured from vegitable oils. Such as corn, soyabean or sunflower oil among others. Since margarine is based on plant sources it doesn't contain cholesterol.
· This is what the Scientists say What does our traditions say about butter

Properties of Butter
· Hrdya - good for heart
· Deepanam - Increases appetite
· Grahi - helps in absorbing the digested nutrients from the intestinal lumen
· Vata pittaghnam
· Chakshushya (good for the eye sight)
· Vrshya (acts as a sexual tonic)
· Jeevanam, brhmanam
Does margarine have these activities?

Butter is better and the best
Useful in the following disorders:
· Kshaya (TB), Aruchi (Loss of taste), Arditha (facial palsy), Pleeha (enlarged spleen), Grahani (spure), Arsha (piles), Akshi roga (eya disorders), Raktha Pitha (bleeding disorders)
· Especially useful in the treatment of Unmada (mania and schizhophrania) and Shopha (edema)
· Visheshadamrutha shishoh (is like nectar to children)
· Use them as fresh as possible for the best results
Would you believe Sushrutha, Charaka or the modern products pushers and the Scientists funded by them?

Poison turned into medicine - Samskara
· "A potent poison also becomes the best drug on proper administration. On the contrary, even the best drug becomes a potent poison if used badly" - Charaka, Sutrasthana
· An example of visha dravya shodhana using panchagavya components :
Vatsanabha - commonly identified as Aconitum Crude aconite is an exteamely lethal substance. Death ensures from myocordial depression or respiratory paralysis.
· Study of effect of shodhana procedure on mice - Dr. S. Dahanukar and team, Mumbai
1. Crude aconite (crude)
2. Processed aconite (compound A) - boiling in two parts of gou mutra for 7 hours per day for two consecutive days. Later the roots are washed and boiled with two parts of cow's milk. Again the roots are washed with lukewarm water, cut into pieces, dried and ground.
3. Aconite processed only in cow's urine for 7 hours per day for two consecutive days (compound B)
4. Aconite processed only in cow's milk for the same duration (compound C)
Results :
· Crude aconite - toxic to the mice even at a dose as low as 1.3 mg / mouse
· 100% mortality resulted when 2.6 mg of crude aconite was administered to each mouse.
· When crude aconite was processed in cow's milk (compound C), the toxicity was significantly reduced with no mortality occuring at a dose of 2.6 mg / mouse. the compound did not become absolutely non toxic
· Processing in cow's urine alone (compound B) also rendered crude aconite less toxic.
· The completely processed aconite (compound A) was found to be absolutely non toxic. Apart from the fact that none of the mice died even at a dose as high as 20.8 mg / mouse. the muscle tone, power, co-ordination and balance were all normal.
Evidence to the capaability of Panchagavya

Food for Thought
· What use is all this knowledge if tomorrow the source of such wealth is no more?????
· Our life is under?????
· Our planet is under threat.
· The one who can get us out of all these is to be Protected.
· If it comes to that with our life our Dharma is Goraksha.
